Dunia Nur

Dunia Nur is a woman of African-descent and holds a dual degree in Social Work and Child & Youth Care, as well as an executive education certificate in business and leadership. She is the co-founder and president of the African Canadian Civic Engagement Council (ACCEC). Dunia has ten years’ experience in social work, management, supervision, and creating rehabilitation programs. Her expertise is in the areas of anti-oppression practices, African Indigenous knowledge systems, community development, Afro-feminism, intersectionality discourse analysis and the analysis of racial and cultural impact on Afro-Indigenous individuals. She is also acquainted with developmental trauma and mental health among refugee populations, and is known for her anti-racism framework, specializing in Islamophobia and gender based violence.

In 2017, she was awarded by the National Black Coalition of Canada Society for achieving academic excellence and providing exceptional programs and services for the Black community. As the president of ACCEC, she co-authored a national study on the impact of COVID-19 on Black Canadians in 2020, which was referred to by the federal government of Canada and Dr. Upton Allen, the Chief of Infectious Diseases at the Hospital for Sick Children.

In partnership with Innovative Research and the ACCEC, Dunia co-authored a national study, titled “Discrimination in Canada – Black Canadian Perspectives”, designed to explore perceptions of Black Canadians and the broader Canadian population in regards to systemic racism, policing, and Canada’s court systems. She has led and championed the creation of an Anti-racism Advisory Committee in the city of Edmonton and collaboratively led the City of Edmonton’s anti-racism strategy, which was approved and resourced by City Council and the Mayor of Edmonton as an anti-racism strategy for the city of Edmonton in 2022. Dunia has also co-authored and supervised the Impact of Race and Culture Assessment in the Provincial Court of Alberta, R v Chol, 2022 ABPC 41.6. In 2022, she was awarded The Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal (Alberta) by the city of Edmonton and the province of Alberta, in recognition of her commitment to creating vibrant inclusive communities. She was also awarded the title of Alberta Justice and Solicitor General in 2022, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to promoting community justice in the province.
